Growth Form: Rhizomatous perennial herbs.

Stems: Often somewhat woody toward base.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Leaves crowded, 2-ranked, somewhat rigid. Blades linear. Margins entire or with short antrorse teeth. Sessile. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in lax, terminal, cymose panicles with racemose or corymbiform branches, pedicels jointed just below flower. Flowers bisexual (perfect), nodding. Tepals 6, blue or white, distinct, ± equal and similar, spreading or reflexed, persistent. Stamens 6, inserted on receptacle or on tepals; anthers opening by terminal pores, becoming slits. Ovary superior, 3-celled; ovules 2 to numerous per cell; style filiform.

Fruit: Berries often blue. Seeds 2 to numerous.
